Dowling and Wall each finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. IT WOULD BE NICE IF KANSAS STATE COULD: Beat Kansas. Ejim had a very productive freshman season last season for the Cyclones. Both of these teams are in the Big 12 – South conference.
On offense, running back Matt Asiata and offensive lineman Zane Beadles were tabbed as the best at their respective positions. With a new quarterback taking over for the graduated Brian Johnson, these two players are expected to play huge roles. Asiata is the only running back with significant minutes, and if the passing game gets bogged down, it will be up to him to gain yards for the offense. Beadles, meanwhile, was a first-team lineman last year, and his selection here was no surprise.
The 15 runs marked the most by Iowa in a conference game since May 3, 1997, when the Hawkeyes won at Penn State, 19-1. It also marked the most runs for Iowa against the Wildcats in 100 meetings. The 15 runs equaled the second most ever by Iowa in a Big Ten game.
Jayhawk fans may be delirious over a possible 4-0 start. That is until one looks at the schedule. The Hawks opening schedule began with wins over Central Michigan, SE Louisiana, and are followed by tilts with Toledo and Florida International. Anything other than 4-0 is going to get serious attention.
The third quadrant starts at Lubbock where the Red Raiders have had A&M’s number for the past several years. This year should be no exception for Mike Leach’s aerial circus. The hapless Iowa State basketball then come to town for a probable win for the Ags. The Colorado game, played in the thin air of Boulder, could go either way but is a probable win for A&M.
Both head coaches put strong bodies around them. McCaffery’s top assistant is Kirk Speraw, who served 17 years as a collegiate head coach at the University of Central Florida. Sherman Dillard has been the head coach at Indiana State and been an assistant coach at Maryland, California and Georgia Tech. Andrew Francis is still young, but he served as McCaffery’s top assistant at Siena for three years before both headed to Iowa this past offseason.
Iowa is in a better position simply because the Big Ten Conference will take a step back after losing several of its best players to graduation. Ohio State will still be good if Jared Sullinger indeed returns like he says he will. But Purdue loses two studs, Wisconsin loses some star players and Michigan State loses a bulk of its talented roster. Illinois also graduates a lot.
Letourneau took the loss for Northwestern to fall to 13-9. She allowed eight runs on eight hits in three and a third. Meghan Lamberth surrendered four runs on seven hits in three and two-thirds of relief.
