This Week In New York Soccer History

Tottenham need their best players to be at their best. After a 2-1 home victory came in Madrid on penalties. A huge lose can be sustained by punters who do not have the basic system and strategy to handle this type of bet.

Goalkeeper – 1. Peter Schmeichel. Between 1991 and 1999 the Danish goalkeeper played for Manchester United. Although there are several candidates for the keepers position, during those years the 6’4″ veteran of 129 international appearances reached standards that I have never seen anyone else get close to.

United enters this match 5-0-5 at home in the league, while the Wizards are 3-5-3 on the road. This is the 34th meeting between the clubs, with United holding a 16-13-8 advantage. In 18 games between the clubs at RFK, United is 10-4-4. The series has produced 113 goals, 58 by United. The teams also met in the 2004 MLS Cup final, with United winning, 3-2.

Once again Wigan find themselves hovering above the relegation zone. For the past two seasons they have managed to find some form in the run-in and pull themselves to safety. This season they have to do it all over again, and all the while being distracted by their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. If all goes well, they will survive relegation and book a place in the cup final at Wembley. If it all goes wrong, they will be playing championship football next season alongside the team – Millwall – who has the potential to knock them out of the cup and claim a place in the final. Wigan’s season really does have the potential to be all or nothing.

But I feel compelled to write about Barcelona today. They battled Real Madrid today in El Clasico, the much-hyped match between the Spanish super-powers with a deep-seeded hatred for one another ranging from politics to sport.

Jose Mourinho. With the squad he had at Chelsea, they should have done a clean sweep. If he used a rotation policy, last season they would have won everything. They looked tired in the 2nd leg of the Champions League semi final, and dropped valuable points in the league due to the high profile games every 3 days. With the squad Benitez has had, he has performed miracles to achieve what he has.

Never bet on cups, especially in France. The French Cup is one of the most unpredictable competitions, for some unknown reason. There are some cases when the leader of the first division is eliminated from the Cup by a virtually unknown fifth division team. Those are 1×2 matches where anything could happen. Try to avoid cups in generally, but keep an eye on the French cup mostly. If you like to take chances and you have a feeling about a certain small team, place a bet on it. After all, football betting is for fun also, and you can be sure watching the game is more enjoyable if you have a bet placed on a certain team.

Personally, I’m hopeful the campaign works and RFK is crowded and loud on September 2. Beyond that, given their response to Seattle and the way the club is moving forward . United better make sure it wins the game.
