It’s nights like tonight when fans catch a glimpse of the potential of this Providence College Friars basketball team. You know, preseason rankings or what not, there are five teams in our division in the top 12 to 15 in the country.
Connecticut is the better team and has more weapons. They cruised rather easily through the West region to reach the Final Four. As for Michigan State, they managed to slip past USC and rallied back against Kansas before stunning Louisville in a game that wasn’t even close.
On the CAA South: “Nobody in our conference is a slouch. It’s a tough conference. If you come out on top in this conference then you actually did something because you’ve got to get up for every game.
In a way he’s right, but in another way, he’s masking over what was a black eye for the program and for the university. So, as always, winning can solve all problems. It won’t come against Penn State, but if it comes against Buffalo, I’m not sure how many people are going to remember Villanova. The Owls would be 1-0 in the MAC, and everything will be right with the Temple world. For one week.
Meanwhile, since we are still about a week away from the seasons starting in full force, here are a bunch of quotes I got from media day. This post is kind of long, so feel free to skim. Make sure through you read David Caldwell’s story about his big hit versus Towson. The best story of media day by far.
Hard to forget this one. They dug deep and were able to overcome a 15 point deficit with only 4 minutes left in the game. And in overtime, they were able to hold on and win by one point 90-89. Deron Williams’ 22 points and 10 assists were huge as Illinois went on to lose in the title game.
Sam Young, Memphis (#36) – How Sam Young fell this far is beyond me. Young averaged 19 points and 6 rebounds per game during his senior season at Pittsburgh and tormented defenders with his pump fake. More than that, though, the 6-6 Young can play two positions and is as tough as they come. He will play right away for a bad Memphis team, and that will help him develop. There is no way 35 players in this draft were better than Young.
Kadeem Batts played one of his best games of the year. He carried the Friars, scoring nearly half of their points. He had 25 points and 9 rebounds while also taking several offensive fouls. He could have easily had 30 points if he hit his free throws better. He was only 5-for-12 from the line, but hit two big free throws with three seconds left to seal the victory. The more and more I see the 6-foot-10 junior develop, the more I am picturing a NBA prospect.
BA, Professional Handicapper’s League: I have Villanova as the better team only because they are more experienced and boast more weapons. Aside from Tucker and Gibson, the Longhorns don’t know exactly where their offense will come for night in and night out. Sure, Aldridge will get you some points and Buckman will battle underneath, but the Cats have four players that can light it up on any given night.
