The Wildcats knocked off heavyweights Duke and Pittsburgh to reach the Final Four. It’s nights like tonight when fans catch a glimpse of the potential of this Providence College Friars basketball team.
A shoplifter was choked to death by a CVS store manager for stealing a tube of toothpaste in Chicago, Daily Mail reports Jan. 17. The manager, identified as Pedro Villanova, clearly wasn’t going to tolerate any stealing in his store — even if it was just a small hygiene item. He chased the man who took the toothpaste and choked him once he caught up with him. A surveillance video captured the whole thing.
The NCAA released the first edition of the 2011 men’s basketball RPI rankings this week and Big East fans should feel encouraged by the results. The rankings are one of many tools used by the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee to select teams for the NCAA tournament. This week’s ranking lists eight Big East teams among the top 18, with Georgetown at No. 1, Syracuse at No. 3, Connecticut at No. 5, St. John’s at No. 7, Pittsburgh at No. 10, West Virginia at No. 12, Notre Dame at No. 14 and Villanova at No. 18. By comparison, no other league has as many as three teams in the top 20.
On what the defense needs to do to compete in the CAA: “You come out of the CAA South alive and you have done something. For our level of football, it’s similar to what the SEC is to the Division 1A level. You know, preseason rankings or what not, there are five teams in our division in the top 12 to 15 in the country. The game has changed. It’s a lot of spread offenses which dictate you have interchangeable parts at the safeties, the outside linebackers and the defensive ends; guys who can run and guys who can play in space. So for us to be successful our guys are going to have to stay healthy, play fast and pursue and be able to play fast in open spaces against the James Madison’s, the Delaware’s, the Richmond’s and the Villanova’s.
I think the big thing is to lead by example. Everybody can give lip service, you can say this and that but if you’re not doing it, your actions don’t back it up, it pretty much goes in one ear and out the other for the young guys. So I feel that the main thing is, even though everybody across the board has different personalities, I think the one thing we have in common is that we try to give examples with our actions more so than our words.
Last year, the 6’8”, 255-pound Harangody led the conference in scoring (23.3 ppg), was second in rebounding (11.8 rpg) and is on pace to graduate as the Big East’s all-time leader in each category.
DaJuan Summers, Detroit (#35) – Summers provides the Pistons with real nice value at #35, as he brings athleticism and versatility to the table. The 6-9 forward can also extended the defense with his shot, shooting 39 percent from 3-point range last season at Georgetown. Detroit needs more athletes, and Summers could definitely help here.
In other Big East action Wednesday night, UConn should have an easy time against DePaul, Pitt goes on the road to Villanova, slumping Georgetown plays at Cincinnati and St. Johns is at West Virginia.
