The Big 12 bracket sets up very nicely for the Sooners, at least in terms of boosting RPI and tournament profile. There’s still a whole lot of talent in the Cyclone backcourt. He’ll be starting at power forward and may be the star of this team.
The Big Ten Network and Big Ten Conference announced Thursday that the Iowa-Northwestern football game in Iowa City at Kinnick Stadium will be shown in prime time.
The 15 runs marked the most by Iowa in a conference game since May 3, 1997, when the Hawkeyes won at Penn State, 19-1. It also marked the most runs for Iowa against the Wildcats in 100 meetings. The 15 runs equaled the second most ever by Iowa in a Big Ten game.
Iowa State also shot the three-ball incredibly well last season, draining 275 (8.6 every game) of their shots from beyond the arc. That was sufficient to pace the conference and rank 13th around the country.
NEEDS TO: Beat Iowa State basketball silly. If there was no Big 12 Tournament, the Cowboys would almost certainly be in the NCAA Tournament. Problem for the Pokes is, there is one. Oklahoma State is probably the only team that can play itself out of a tournament bid with a loss. With a favorable crowd in Oklahoma City and an opponent OSU has already beaten by 19, a slip up against the Cyclones would be a huge blow, and would leave the Cowboys sweating on Selection Sunday.
NEEDS TO: Win a game. The Wildcats backed their way into a first-round bye by somehow winning a tiebreaker among four teams (Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State being the others). K-State really doesn’t have much of a chance to make the NCAAs without winning the tournament, but beating (most likely) Texas in the quarterfinals would help justfy the bye and make the Wildcats a more attractive candidate to host a first-round NIT game.
Wrestling coverage suffered a blow with McCool’s departure. I’m sure he’ll be involved still, but it won’t be the same when it comes to spotlighting the state’s No. 1 sport.
A memorial scholarship was created, and a memorial to Trice is located in the Jacobson Athletic Building’s Gary Thompson Hall of Honor. A statue in his honor was unveiled in 1984 and was moved to the east side of the Jacobson Athletic Building in 1997, greeting visitors entering Jack Trice Stadium, which was renamed after him after a student discovered the history of behind the then almost forgotten football player.
