The difference between the top three schools in the conference is very slim. Northwestern ended the team’s run at perfection in 2010 and then edged the Hawks last year in Evanston, Illinois. Up next for Vanderbilt is a home game against Ole Miss.
Winning the first two games 12-7 and 15-14, Northwestern salvaged the final game at home Sunday, winning 11-3 at Sharon J. Drysdale Field in Evanston, Ill. The 11-3 win by the Wildcats also ended in five innings.
Texas Longhorns – Colt McCoy has left Garrett Gilbert with some big shoes to fill, and my guess is that it is going to take him some time to fill those shoes. Coach Mack Brown agrees, and that’s why he is changing his offense to a more traditional one with a power running game to create easy play-action opportunities for Gilbert. I expect Longhorns fans to really realize just how special of a player McCoy was this year.
But the promising career abruptly ended in tragedy. Trice played in the season-opener, a 14-6 win over Simpson College on Sept. 29 in Ames. He then traveled with the team to Minneapolis the following weekend for an Oct. 6 showdown at Minnesota.
The big surprise of the 2007 season is the rapid decent of the Iowa State basketball into second position. This is really turning into a banner year for the Cyclones and opens up the possibility of two perfect seasons going 1-2 in the final rankings. This is a school from the powerhouse Big 12 that has achieved the impossible by losing to both Kent State and Northern Iowa in consecutive weeks. The best hope for Iowa State rests on September 22 with a game against Toledo. Most schools that find their way into the Futility Rankings are heavily focused on basketball. Iowa State is focused simply on losing.
Kansas leads the all-time series with Iowa State 171-59, dating back to 1908. KU holds an 88-15 advantage in games played in Lawrence, including a 47-9 record versus Iowa State in Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks have defeated the Cyclones seven-straight times in Allen Fieldhouse since 2006. Iowa State is one of only seven teams to have won in Allen Fieldhouse during the Bill Self era, which began in 2003-04. The Cyclones defeated the Jayhawks 63-61 on Feb. 19, 2005. Since the inception of the Big 12, Kansas is 26-8 against Iowa State with a 24-8 record in regular-season play and a 2-0 mark in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
The Cyclones (3-2 overall) come into Saturday’s game (6 p.m. MST, FOX College Sports) in Ames, Iowa riding a huge 52-38 win over Texas Tech, in which Iowa State ran for over 250 yards and quarterback Austin Arnaud threw for 190 yards and four touchdowns despite a shoulder injury.
Oklahoma State Cowboys – Dana Holgorsen comes over Houston after his scheme helped the Cougars boast the No. 1 ranked offense in the country. He should pick up right where he left off at Oklahoma State, but the defensive side of the football will keep the Cowboys from being serious contenders.
