The Iowa offense compiled 30 runs in the three-game set. It’s a small two- or three-year window to make a mark, and at least he’s being given a chance. Wrestling coverage suffered a blow with McCool’s departure.
There is a buzz in Cyclone land as CoachGreg McDermott heads into his fourth season. McDermott has a reputation for rebuilding programs as is shown by his tremendous work at Northern Iowa. He made them a Missouri Valley powerhouse with multiple NCAA appearances.
Following the Hawkeyes’ nine-run fourth inning, the home team posted a three-spot in the fifth to cut the deficit to 11-7. Iowa used an RBI single by Massey in the sixth to make the score 12-7, before the junior starter closed out the victory.
Both teams had tough seasons — Iowa went 11-20 and finished with four wins in Big Ten Conference play, while Iowa State basketball was 16-16 and won just three games in the Big 12 Conference. But the youth and inexperience of both squads showed as the teams worked their way through the growing pains of new coaching staffs.
Trailing 4-2 in the fourth, the Hawkeyes sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs on eight hits to take an 11-4 lead in their first Big Ten road contest to rally past the Wildcats in the opener.
McCool was the cornerstone of wrestling coverage for probably about three decades. Every coach, wrestler, manager, parent or sibling associated with the sport knew McCool. He captured the respect of those in the wrestling community. McCool had a knack of finding good stories and blending it with a tremendous knowledge of the action on the mat.
There are huge grass areas for overflow fans and visiting spectators.almost guaranteeing a chance at a ticket on your road trip. Another positive is the decent bathroom to spectator ratio, which came in handy.
As experienced as they are on offense the Cyclones are just as green on defense. Goner are all three starting linebackers from a year ago, including the Big 12 leading tackler Jesse Smith. Jake Knott and A.J. Klein are expected to start on the outside, while a junior college transfer will fill the middle linebacker position. The unit also lacks experience in the trenches, Bailey Johnson started eight games at nose tackle and Patrick Neal made nine starts at the end position. The secondary is solid with Leonard Johnson and Ter’Ran Benton at the corners and Strong Safety David Sims.
