Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas has signed the icon to take over the reins when Celine Dion’s contract is up. No other film mixes sex and baseball quite like Bull Durham. Saving Private Ryan is another movie that has to make my list.
When discussing the greatest actors working in Hollywood, Russell Crowe is one person who definitely deserves some praise. Crowe got his start in acting in the late 1970s on television. It may have taken some time, but the New Zealand native has risen up the ranks to become one of the better actors in the industry.
The films ‘there’s no place like home’ images-the yellow brick road, the Emerald City, etc. – and characters have become permanent staples of popular culture. There have been hundreds of references and tributes in books, TV shows, songs and art. Over the years, Dorothy has become an archetype, representing a character that, in some respect, we can all relate to.
Originally this was an extremely popular TV series running from 1966 to 1973. It was ahead of its time in many ways, including the high-tech gadgetry used on the show. This was one of my favorite TV shows growing up, because I absolutely loved the theme song composed by Lalo Schifrin. I use to love making up dance routines to it. In 1996 I was thrilled they made a movie version of “Mission Impossible” that I went to see the very day it opened.
It goes without saying that Martin Scorsese has to make a list of the best directors working today. He may be getting older, but his movies are as good as ever. In fact, he recently 12 years a slave awards years a slave awards for Best Director in 2006 for The Departed.
Starting out in the world as Cherilyn Sarkesian LaPiere in May 1946, she grew up as a poor kid in California. She spent most of her childhood staying in an orphanage while her mother worked acting jobs in Hollywood. She was a poor student in school, often aloof and un-interested. She was not diagnosed dyslectic until she was an adult but the stars in her eyes shown early. Practicing her autograph at the age of 10, somehow knowing she would need it someday. And need it she did. She met Salvatore Bono when she was 16, he was 28. Sonny working as Phil Spector’s gopher in the mid 1960’s also had aspirations of becoming much more than he was.
It is not surprising that opera as an art form blossomed in Florence and Naples. Napoli is one of the oldest cities in the world, a place where music and song have reverberated down the streets and out of the concert halls for centuries. Music resonates through the Neapolitan gene pool – E ‘nel sangue.
The song “Under The Sea” faced off against another The Little Mermaid song in 1989 in the form of “Kiss The Girl.” Disney makes powerful hit movies and generally never cheap out on big musical numbers for them. Alan Menken wrote the music for “Under The Sea” while Howard Ashman took credit for the lyrics. A song with a Caribbean vibe, it was song by Samuel E. Wright for the movie. Or you may know the performer better as Sebastian the sea crab. The crab was of course trying to show the mermaid Ariel how much better life is under the sea in hopes that she would give up on her going to land daydreams.
